Der Spiegel has a long piece putting together various puzzle pieces that imply the U.S. is increasingly concerned about Iran, particularly given its nuclear possibilities. There may be evidence of Al Qaeda activity in Iran as well. Apparently, U.S. officials have been making visits to various bordering
countries, including Turkey. I tend to agree with Decision 08's views that this is an effort to gain some leverage and back Iran into negotiations. I don't agree with the Liberty Street perspective that Iran's situation is caused by our involvement in Iraq, or that we're planning an imminent bombing. The greater danger is that Israel is going to bomb Iran, and I'm sure our diplomatic effort is partly aimed at trying to reduce that eventuality. However, Politics in the Zeros suggests that we would have Israel do our bombing for us - conspiracy theory running amuck. Why do these liberal, anti-war types think that anyone would "want" to bomb Iran? On the other hand, why can't they see that Iran is being run by a nut-case that appears to be irrational and unpredictable?
